How to track mileage for taxes
A paper log, an automatic tracker, or a button you press. Each has its price.
Three ways
- A paper log in the glove box: free and reliable, if you write every trip and do the subtraction.
- An automatic tracker: it runs in the background all day, guesses when you drive, and often misses short trips or invents others. Most charge a subscription.
- Start and Arrived buttons: you press them, the phone measures the road. Nothing runs between trips.
Classify the same day
A trip is easiest to classify when you arrive: business or personal, which client, why. Leave it for the evening if you must, but not for the end of the year.
Don't lose the forgotten ones
Everyone forgets to press a button now and then. Add the trip by hand the same day, from the two odometer readings or the distance. See Forgot to log a trip.
With Mileage Log
Start, Arrived, then Business, Personal or Later. The month's deductible distance and amount are on the first screen. See Mileage tracker.
